Blue Origin launches historic flight to space

Ed Dwight, the United States' first Black astronaut candidate, became the oldest person to go to space on Sunday as Blue Origin launched its New Shepard NS-25 spacecraft and completed its first human flight since 2022.  The 90-year-old Dwight took his first trip to space more than 60 decades after President John F. Kennedy appointed him in 1961 to the elite Aerospace Research Pilot School -- the Air Force program from which NASA astronauts were chosen.

Actor William Shatner was previously the oldest to fly to space. He was 90 years and 206 days old when he flew on a previous Blue Origin flight on Oct. 13, 2021. Dwight will be 90 years and 253 days old on Sunday.

John Glenn, at 77, remains the oldest person to actually launch into orbit. Blue Origin travels just above the Karman Line, about 62 miles above Earth and NASA's definition of space, while Glenn went 100 miles higher on the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1998.  ABC News' Gina Sunseri contributed to this report.

Google and Harvard unveil most detailed art ever map of human brain

This image displays a single human neuron (white) and all of the axons from other neurons that connect to it. The blue threads are inhibitory axons, while the green ones are excitatory axons. Neurons are the cellular building blocks of the nervous system.

The 3D image above shows excitatory neurons colored by their depth from the surface of the brain. Blue neurons are those closest to the surface, and fuchsia marks the innermost layer.

A rendering shows all of the excitatory (pyramidal) neurons in a part of the brain sample, at varying degrees of magnification and tilt. They are colored by size; the cell body (central core) of the cells ranges from 15 to 30 micrometers across.

Art is subjective. And while many artists long to share their work with the world, there’s no guarantee that the audience will understand it, or even like it.

The exhibition has been running at the gallery in the Australian capital, Canberra, since March.

Australian billionaire Gina Rinehart reportedly wants a portrait of her removed from an exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia

King Charles first official portrait

"KC3"

Buckingham Palace revealed the first official portrait of King Charles III since his coronation on Tuesday, and it’s proving to be divisive with its lurid red brushstrokes.  The 8.5 by 6.5-foot painting is by British artist Jonathan Yeo

Baobab Trees The Tree Of Life and A.k.a The Upside Down Tree

Baobab Trees The Tree Of  Life and A.k.a The Upside Down Tree

Scientists have solved the mystery of the origins of ancient baobab trees.  According to DNA studies, the iconic trees first arose in Madagascar 41 million years ago.  Their seeds were later carried on ocean currents to Australia and also to mainland.

"And the data have enabled us to provide important new insights which will inform their conservation to safeguard their future."  The researchers studied eight baobab species, six of which are found in Madagascar, one widespread across Africa, and another in north-west Australia.  They are calling for a higher conservation status for two endangered Malagasy species, including the biggest and most famous of Madagascar's baobabs, the giant baobab.  Baobabs are one of the most remarkable trees on earth, deeply intertwined with local cultures and traditions.  They are also known as "mother of the forest" in Malagasy language, the "upside down tree" and the "tree of life". The trees can live for thousands of years, growing to a huge size and storing large amounts of water in their trunks to survive through the dry seasons.  Their fruits are regarded as a super food and their trunk can be used to make fibers which are used for ropes or clothing.

Northern Lights May 11th 2024

This may sound like science fiction, but this is no movie. Dancing ribbons of light, scientifically known as aurora and often called the Northern Lights, are painting the night sky across the U.S. and around the world.  Considered the holy grail of skywatching, people often travel thousands of miles to see this rare phenomenon, typically only visible in the winter months and near the earth's magnetic poles. Think Scandinavia, Iceland, Finland, the far north in Alaska.  But a rare solar storm is painting the skies across wide swaths of the U.S. with bold hues of green, purple and red. The Northern Lights are expected to beam as far south as Northern California to Texas to North Carolina.  "This is an unusual and potentially historic event," Clinton Wallace, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center, said in a release.  What's causing this rare light show? NOAA space weather forecasters have observed at least seven coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the sun.  CMEs are explosions of plasma and magnetic fields from the sun’s corona. This epic blast of solar wind can cause geomagnetic storms when they are directed at Earth. In other words, explosions of particles from the sun have been blasted into space.  NOAA says this mass eruption of solar material is very rare. The last time an extreme geomagnetic storm hit earth in such a massive way was in 2003.
