Follow Ash Dykes Adventures
Millions are watching Ash Dykes travel through the Congo Basin. Why do we love watching other people put themselves through extreme adventures?
Ash Dykes Travels The World!
Millions of people are following extreme adventurer Ash Dykes on social media as he attempts to kayak 434 miles through the Congo Basin, which is considered one of the most hazardous and remote environments in the world.
Starting this week, the 35-year-old will travel in an inflatable kayak through waters inhabited by crocodiles and hippos, potentially encountering gorillas and elephants along the way. Consisting of 500 million acres of land and the second-largest river basin in the world, the Congo Basin is a hotspot for tropical diseases and is classed as unsafe to travel due to health, crime, unrest, terrorism and kidnapping risks, according to the State Department.
In a social media post outlining the challenge, Dykes warned he could be "days away from proper medical help" at some of the most remote points of the journey.
Dykes has built a reputation for undertaking increasingly extreme adventures, including becoming the first person to trek across Mongolia solo and unsupported, and the first person on record to walk the entire length of the Yangtze River in China.Dykes has built a reputation for undertaking increasingly extreme adventures, including becoming the first person to trek across Mongolia solo and unsupported, and the first person on record to walk the entire length of the Yangtze River in China.

Gertrude Abercrombie 1951 Shells Painting FOUND
Gertrude Abercrombie's 1951 painting "Alderman Merriam's Shells."

An enigmatic oil painting bought for just $30 at an estate sale fetched more than $1.35 million at auction after it was confirmed to be the work of celebrated surrealist Gertrude Abercrombie.
The 8-by-11-inch still-life was discovered in a "dark corner" of a Michigan home in July, according to Freeman's, the auction house that brought the painting to market this month. An expert has identified it as Abercrombie's "Alderman Merriam's Shells," which had been unseen in public for almost 75 years.
Completed in 1951, the painting depicts a collection of ten seashells — a common motif used by Abercrombie, who is often described as American art's "Bohemian Queen." Over the next two years, it was exhibited at six of the painter's solo exhibitions, then priced between $50 and $150.

Upon seeing the signature (reading "Abercrombie, '51"), barely visible against the dark background, the buyer took a $30 gamble. According to Freeman's, they then diverted a family vacation to visit Milwaukee Art Museum, where an Abercrombie exhibition was on show. There, in an exhibition catalog, a 1952 news clipping showed a photo of the painting next to the real-life shells it depicts.
