A Rare 9 Caret Pink Diamond A.K.A. Grand Condé

A Rare 9 Caret Pink Diamond A.K.A. "Grand Condé"
L’École des Arts Joailliers, Benjamin Chelly

The nine-carat, pear-shaped gemstone was one of few royal jewels to survive the French Revolution
A rare pink diamond is going on display in France for the first time since it was stolen almost 100 years ago to the day - the last time it was shown to the public.

The nine-carat, pear-shaped gemstone known as the "Grand Condé" was pilfered in an overnight raid on the Château de Chantilly in October 1926 and concealed in a hollowed-out apple.

The diamond - one of few royal jewels to survive the French Revolution - was recovered a few weeks later when a hungry maid at the hotel in which the thieves were staying took a bite of the apple.

It will once again be on display in the Condé Museum at the Château de Chantilly until 3 January.

The museum's director Mathieu Deldicque said that while the apple story may sounds far-fetched, it was widely covered by newspapers at the time.

Deldicque has faced questions about whether the exhibition may be tempting fate, especially given the string of heists on European cultural institutions in the past 12 months, including the daring daylight robbery of jewellery from the Louvre museum in Paris.

While he declined to reveal to CNN how much the diamond was insured for, he noted that extensive academic study into the properties of the diamond had taken place to make it uniquely identifiable.

The results of this analysis, as well as previously unseen archive material about the gem's history and theft, form part of the exhibition, according to the museum.

Naturally occurring pink diamonds are exceptionally rare and often sell for tens of millions of dollars. The highest price ever fetched for one at auction was $71.2m (£53.6m) in 2017, according to Sotheby's.

The exact origins of the Grand Condé remain a mystery.

It was first mentioned in 1740 in an inventory of Louis Henri de Bourbon, Prince of Condé, drawn up following his death, the Château de Chantilly said.

It then became part of the collection of Queen Marie-Amélie of Bourbon-Sicily, the wife of French King Louis Philippe I, and then her son, Prince Henri of Orléans, the Duke of Aumale.

He bequeathed it to the Institut de France, which now owns the Château de Chantilly, 50km (31 miles) north of Paris, along with thousands of artworks and manuscripts which became the Musée Condé collection.

A heartbreaking image of an elephant carrying a dead calf has been named the overall winner of the 2026 Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.
The image, named “The Aftermath,” was taken by Italian photographer Federico Veronesi. It shows a female elephant carrying the calf in Namibia, according to a statement from the Natural History Museum, which organizes the competition, on Tuesday.

“This photograph works on so many levels. Emotionally it’s a gut punch, heartbreakingly poignant. Intellectually it’s proof that animals have cognition,” said Kathy Moran, chair of the competition’s jury, in the statement.

Study from 1960 predicted the world will end next month

1 Minute To Midnight?

The end of the world is just a month away, according to a scientific paper published 66 years ago.

The 1960 paper, published in the prestigious journal Science, predicted the date of Doomsday would be Friday 13th of November, 2026.

Written by Austrian American physicist Heinz von Foerster alongside researchers from the University of Illinois, the study analysed historical demographic trends to conclude that world population growth was hyper-exponential.

It is the closest it has ever been to midnight, with world leading scientists pointing to the dangers of global war, climate change, and out-of-control AI.

“Our current trajectory is unsustainable,” John Mecklin, editor of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, said at the unveiling of the latest Doomsday Clock in January.

Life imitates art far more than art imitates life

"Life imitates art far more than art imitates life" is
a philosophical concept—known as anti-mimesis—stating that people, nature, and real-world events mirror the forms, styles, and ideas invented by artists.

Key Class Ideas
  • Oscar Wilde’s Theory: In his 1889 essay The Decay of Lying, Wilde argued that nature has no intrinsic shape or beauty until art teaches us how to look at it. For example, he claimed London fogs were "invented" by impressionist painters and poets because no one noticed their beauty until art captured them. [1, 2, 3]
  • Perception and Behavior: Humans naturally adopt the aesthetics, worldviews, and behaviors popularized in movies, literature, and paintings. [1, 2]
  • Defictionalization: As tracked on TV Tropes, hypothetical inventions, sci-fi concepts, and storytelling tropes frequently turn into real-world technology or actual events. [1]
  • Art Imitates Life (The Flip Side): While Wilde focused on the reverse, traditional mimesis (championed by Plato and others) holds that art is merely a reflection or copy of the physical world. In consensus from community discussions like Reddit, the two forces exist in a continuous loop where creators draw from reality, and society then reshapes reality to match the art.

Life imitates art far more than art imitates life's story! -XOXO jzebraa
