Franklin from “Peanuts” stars in his own TV special called “Welcome Home Franklin.” His character emerged from the turmoil of 1968. Weeks after Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, “Peanuts” creator Charles Shultz introduced a Black character. Franklin became a small but impactful symbol of racial harmony, but a scene from the 1973 Thanksgiving special is now viewed as a terrible slight. A half-century later, Franklin is finally taking his proper place at the table.
