Dash Crofts passed away on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at the age of either 85 or 87, depending on the source. He died in an Austin, Texas hospital due to heart failure following complications from heart surgery. His death follows that of his long-time musical partner, Jim Seals, who died in 2022.
Dash Crofts (1938/1940–2026), born Darrell George Crofts, was an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist best known as one half of the 1970s soft-rock duo Seals & Crofts.
Musical Career
Crofts was a central figure in the "yacht rock" and soft-rock movements of the 1970s.
- Signature Hits: Alongside Jim Seals, he produced top-10 classics including "Summer Breeze" (1972), "Diamond Girl" (1973), and "Get Closer" (1976).
- Instrumentation: While originally a drummer, Crofts was highly proficient on the mandolin and guitar, contributing a unique texture to the duo's sound.
- Early Years: Before forming the duo in 1969, Crofts and Seals were both members of the instrumental group The Champs, famous for the hit "Tequila".
- Solo Work: He released one solo album titled Today in 1998.
Personal Life
- Faith: Crofts was a devout adherent of the Baháʼí Faith, which heavily influenced the duo's lyrics and themes of love and nature. This faith was the catalyst for their controversial 1974 song "Unborn Child".
- Family & Legacy: He is survived by his wife and three children. His daughter, Lua Crofts, continues his musical legacy by performing in the group Seals & Crofts 2 alongside Jim Seals' cousin, Brady Seals.
