A True Inspriration!
Ray Of Light!

William Orbit, the highly influential British electronic musician and record producer who defined the sound of late-1990s pop, has died at the age of 69. According to an official statement released by his family on August 7, 2026, he passed away peacefully at home on July 23, 2026. No cause of death was publicly disclosed. Orbit, born William Wainwright, was best known for his landmark collaboration with Madonna on her multi-Grammy-winning 1998 album Ray of Light, as well as producing critically acclaimed records for Blur and All Saints. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Musical Legacy and Major Collaborations
Orbit spent four decades pioneering the fusion of ambient techno, acid house, and electronic dance music into the pop mainstream. Throughout his career, he sold over 200 million recordings worldwide. [1, 2, 3]
  • Madonna: Orbit revitalized the pop icon's career with Ray of Light, blending trip-hop beats with electronic textures. The album won three Grammy Awards. He also co-wrote and produced her Grammy-winning single “Beautiful Stranger” (1999) and contributed to her albums Music (2000) and MDNA (2012). [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Blur: Brought in to steer the Britpop band toward alternative sonic territory, Orbit produced their darker, acclaimed 1999 album 13, which featured the hit singles "Tender" and "Coffee & TV". [1, 2]
  • All Saints: He brought his signature "dreamy, blissful aura" to the British girl group, producing their consecutive UK Number 1 hits "Pure Shores" and "Black Coffee" in 2000. [1, 2]
  • Other Collaborators: Orbit worked across multiple genres, leaving his mark on tracks for artists like U2 ("Electrical Storm"), Pink ("Feel Good Time"), Britney Spears (Britney Jean), No Doubt, Melanie C, and Beth Orton. [1, 2, 3]
Solo Career and Instrumental Success
Beyond his work as a pop hitmaker, Orbit was a highly regarded solo artist, releasing 12 studio albums. [1, 2]
  • Early Projects: He began his musical journey in the 1980s with the synth group Torch Song before forming the electronic act Bassomatic in the 1990s. [1]
  • Classical Crossovers: His 1999 solo album, Pieces in a Modern Style, showcased electronic interpretations of classical works. A high-energy trance remix of his version of Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings" by DJ Ferry Corsten became a massive global club phenomenon and reached Number 2 on the UK singles chart. [1, 2]
  • Recent Work: Orbit remained active and creative late into his life. He released his solo comeback album, The Painter, in 2022, followed by the electronic release WFO in 2024. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Extinct toad from the ice age discovered at Los Angeles La Brea Tar Pits

Reconstruction of Spea labreae, sp. nov. (dark spadefoots, center and right) in La Brea Tar Pits compared with Spea hammondii (light spadefoot, left), the species currently present in the area, and the Mexican burrowing toad (Rhinophrynidae, bottom). - Arturo Dávalos

In the heart of urban Los Angeles lie the La Brea Tar Pits, a group of natural asphalt seeps made famous by the millions of ice age fossils preserved within the bubbling, dark pools of goo.

Excavations of the pits have yielded bones of species that once roamed the area tens of thousands of years ago, including giant mammoths, mastodons, saber-toothed tigers and dire wolves.

But large mammals aren't the only window into history that the asphalt has provided. Now, scientists have discovered the first extinct ice age amphibian from Los Angeles, a spadefoot toad named after the tar pits: Spea labreae. The findings are reported in a study published Wednesday in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.

Highest resolution view of the sun yet reveals magnetic mysteries

The highest resolution image of the sun's surface was captured by a powerful telescope.

The world’s most powerful solar telescope has captured the highest resolution observations of the sun’s visible surface — and uncovered a hidden process that drives solar activity.

Scientists used the National Science Foundation’s Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, located near the summit of Haleakalā, a volcano on the Hawaiian island of Maui, to zoom into a magnetically active area near a sunspot. Sunspots are considered hotspots of solar activity.
